Installing Universal Type Server

Installing a new Universal Type Server

To install Universal Type Server, double click the installer icon and allow the installer to guide you.

After the installer finishes, the Server Administration web interface automatically opens in your default browser. Use this interface to begin configuring your Universal Type Server installation to best meet your needs.

For complete installation and configuration details, see the help available from this interface, or download PDF versions of all of the user guides from the Extensis website.

Upgrading from previous versions of Type Server

If you are upgrading from a previous version of Universal Type Server, it is important to follow these upgrade instructions.

  1. From the Server Administration web interface, create a backup of your datastore. In the Datastore area, click the Backups link and click Backup Now. Store a copy of your backup TAR file in a secure location.
  2. If upgrading Universal Type Server on a Mac OS X server, use the Server Administration web interface to stop Universal Type Server.
  3. Double click the Universal Type Server installer icon and allow the installer to upgrade your current server installation.
  4. Upgrade all of your Universal Type Clients when possible. Version 1.0 clients can connect to a 2.1 server, so Type Clients can be upgraded when it is convenient.

NOTE: During the upgrade process, all users will be disconnected. After upgrading the server, users will need to login to the Type Server again.

Improved administration interface

The Users and Workgroups Administration web interface was updated to allow easier user administration.

Font compliance reporting

The reporting feature allows you to check font licensing to ensure that you remain in compliance.

External Database Module

A new module allows you to store the Universal Type Server database in an external Microsoft SQL Server database. This optional module is available as an additional purchase for Universal Type Server Pro. This optional module is available as an additional purchase for Universal Type Server Pro.

Directory Integration

Allows you to bind Universal Type Server to an LDAP server, such as Active Directory on Windows, or Open Directory on Mac.

Machine-based licensing

Universal Type Clients are now licensed on a machine basis. This allows you to have two or more users on a single machine, and have only a single client license consumed for that machine.

Client licensing updates

Client licenses are tracked by Type Server ensuring that client users who have not connected to the network for more than 30 days are prompted to reconnect, then cleared if no connection is established. This releases the license for use by another client.

Manage client system fonts through System Font Policies

To maintain control over rogue fonts in client user system font folders, administrators can now create a system font policy. This is basically a list of fonts allowed into client operating system folders that can be enforced on a user-by-user basis.

Batch apply user settings

Administrators can now select multiple users to apply and update settings for all selected users at once. Import users from a TXT file – To speed setup and configuration of your server, Universal Type Server now supports the import of users through a tab-delimited text file.
