To install Universal Type Server, double click the installer icon and allow the installer to guide you.
After the installer finishes, the Server Administration web interface automatically opens in your default browser. Use this interface to begin configuring your Universal Type Server installation to best meet your needs.
For complete installation and configuration details, see the help available from this interface, or download PDF versions of all of the user guides from the Extensis website.
If you are upgrading from a previous version of Universal Type Server, it is important to follow these upgrade instructions.
- From the Server Administration web interface, create a backup of your datastore. In the Datastore area, click the Backups link and click Backup Now. Store a copy of your backup TAR file in a secure location.
- If upgrading Universal Type Server on a Mac OS X server, use the Server Administration web interface to stop Universal Type Server.
- Double click the Universal Type Server installer icon and allow the installer to upgrade your current server installation.
- Upgrade all of your Universal Type Clients when possible. Version 1.0 clients can connect to a 1.0.1 server, so Type Clients can be upgraded when it is convenient.
NOTE: During the upgrade process, all users will be disconnected. After upgrading the server, users will need to login to the Type Server again.
This version of Universal Type Server improves overall performance and scalability. The server also handles inactive users more effectively and no longer counts logins via Server Administration web interfaces against client connection licenses. Also addressed were a number of usability improvements to the Users and Workgroups Administration web interface, particularly with importing users, user list selection and managing default settings. See the full list of Fixed Issues below for details..
Universal Type Server is an entirely new product built from the ground up. If you previously used a client/server font manager from Extensis, Universal Type Server contains a number of enhancements compared to previous font managers. The following are some of the many enhancements included.
Enhancements Compared to Font Reserve Server
Universal Type Server leverages the true client/server architecture and granular user permissions that were hallmarks of Font Reserve Server, and then enhances those features with an elegant, flexible cross-platform user interface.
- Cross-platform server and client software offers Mac and Windows users the same experience and reduces hardware restrictions.
- Intuitive interface conceptually based on Suitcase Fusion offers easier font access, improving user satisfaction and decreasing training and support needs.
- Live previews allow users to compare fonts with custom text, in a waterfall, and more.
- User roles provide a template for user permissions, streamlining setup and allowing quick, consistent changes to settings.
- Web-based tools for managing the server, workgroups, and users allow administrators to work from any system, anywhere.
- Offline mode makes it easy for remote workers to access fonts while not connected. Users can continue to add and use new fonts while offline by using personal workgroups.
- Smart sets save sophisticated find criteria and update in real time, allowing designers to always see, for example, all Adobe OpenType Script fonts, all fonts with a specific keyword, or whatever they need.
- License details are enhanced for tracking font software licenses and ensuring compliance.
- Server-based command-line tool brings the ability to automate server functions via scripts.
- Modern client architecture built upon an SQL Lite platform that uses a multi-threaded background process.
- Universal application stable and designed to run on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac computers.
Enhancements Compared to Suitcase Server
Universal Type Server leverages the accessible interface and easy setup of Suitcase Server and adds the true client/server architecture of Font Reserve Server. With more granular permissions and a powerful back end, Universal Type Server is suited to large organizations that need strict controls over font usage while continuing to meet the needs of smaller workgroups looking for centralization.
- Real-time font delivery ensures that all clients are accessing the right fonts, all the time; synchronization option is still available.
- Web-based tools for managing the server, workgroups, and users allow administrators to work from any system, anywhere.
- Built-in backup and restore capabilities provide fail-safe disaster recovery.
- Font workgroups allow administrators to organize fonts by project, department, and more, controlling access and ensuring proper usage.
- User roles provide a template for user permissions, streamlining setup and allowing quick, consistent changes to settings.
- Smart sets save sophisticated find criteria and update in real time, allowing designers to always see, for example, all Adobe OpenType Script fonts, all fonts with a specific keyword, or whatever they need.
- License details are enhanced for tracking font software licenses and ensuring compliance.
- Font management enhancements such as Group Fonts by Family, more editable font attributes, and metadata help users locate fonts.
- Package-based installer can distribute software from a single administrative location.
- Server-based scripting brings automation potential.
- Serialize all client software at the server level.
- Modern server architecture built upon an SQL Lite platform that uses a multi-threaded background process.
- Auto-activation plug-ins for modern Mac OS X and Windows design applications, including InDesign and QuarkXPress, provide precision font matching through patented Font Sense technology.
We strive to create products that effectively meet customer needs. Rarely you may run into areas where the software may not function as expected.
